Yes, on the day you are picking up your new car you are covered for the old car until you physically collect and start driving your new car, at which point your cover will switch to the new car. This is providing we are currently covering your old car and have agreed to transfer the insurance to your new car and you pick up the new car on the day that we have agreed to start insuring it from.
We want to reassure you that you’re still covered by the terms of your car insurance policy if you’re considering taking your vehicle outside of the UK from 1st January 2021. The UK Government has announced that discussions with the EU to agree the terms of the future relationship between the two have been successful, and a trade deal has been confirmed. However, not all of the details are fully known. Until such time as we know what the specific terms are, you may need to take a few additional steps in order to drive in the EU/European Economic Area (EEA).
Currently, you will need to carry a Green Card with you when you travel outside the UK in your vehicle from 1st January 2021.
A Green Card is an International Motor Insurance Certificate which evidences that your current insurance policy provides the necessary minimum level of cover for driving in the EU country you are travelling to or through. While we await further details, it is best to carry your Green Card for all journeys to the EU or EEA. In addition to the basic cover which the Green Card gives you, your insurance policy provides you with full insurance cover for up to 90 days, unless you hold an Ageas Essentials policy.
You can find more information on our Driving in Europe page.
Please note: Ageas Essentials policies are limited to the minimum third party cover when driving in the EU. Please see your policy documents for more information.
Please ensure you have entered the claims information exactly as recorded by your previous insurer. If you believe they have recorded the information incorrectly please contact them for advice.
About car insurance
Car insurance is designed to protect you financially in the event of an incident which causes damage or injury to a vehicle, person, animal or property. Insuring your car is a legal requirement in the UK, unless you have registered your car as being off the road through a Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN).
There are three types of car insurance cover available in the UK: third party, third party, fire and theft and comprehensive. Depending on the type of insurance policy you have, your insurance will include different levels of protection.
Third party insurance is the minimum cover required by law. With this type of cover, if you have an accident and it’s your fault, your insurer will pay to repair the damage caused to the other vehicle or property, and compensate anyone left injured, aside from yourself. They wouldn’t pay to repair your own vehicle or for any damage caused to your own property or injury caused to yourself.
Third party fire and theft policies offer the same cover as a third party policy, as well as cover to your own vehicle if there’s a fire, theft, or attempted theft.
Comprehensive car insurance cover, also known as fully comprehensive cover, offers the highest level of protection available. The level of protection offered can vary between insurers, but it usually covers:
- Damage to your own car following an accident where you’re at fault.
- The cost of replacing your windscreen or window glass.
- Accidental or malicious damage to your car, including vandalism.
- Medical expenses if you or a passenger is injured in an accident involving your car.
These are the different types of car insurance cover you can get, depending on the policy you choose and your insurer. Additionally, most insurers will also give you the option to include additional cover to your policy for an extra cost. These optional extras, also known as car insurance add-ons, can include breakdown cover, key protection cover and legal expenses.
Getting car insurance is essential not only to drive legally, but also to give you peace of mind that you’re protected in the event of an accident.
When looking to buy an insurance policy, it’s important to bear in mind that there are several factors used to set the price of your insurance. How much each factor affects the price and terms of your policy will vary between insurers, but the factors that providers will usually look at include your age, your occupation, your insurance claims history, the car you drive, where you park and your annual mileage. There are a few relatively simple things you can look at to try to cut the cost of your insurance premium.
Once you’ve got a car insurance policy in place, if you ever need to claim on it, you will need to contact your insurer and provide as many details as possible about the incident and any other drivers involved. In fact, you should inform your insurer about any incidents, even if you choose not to claim on your policy – for instance, if the damage is minor or you’d rather cover the cost of any repairs yourself without impacting the number of years of no claims discount you have.
There are some common misconceptions about car insurance that you will want to stay clear of. When in doubt, it’s always best to check what you’re covered for by contacting your insurer or reading your policy documents.
You can get a car insurance quote online either directly on an insurer’s website or through one of the available comparison websites. In either case, you should have some information to hand about yourself and the car you’re looking to insure, as providers will need it to determine whether they can offer you a quote and what the price of your premium will be. Before starting your quote, be prepared to provide the following information:
- Your age, occupation and address
- Details of any previous car insurance claims and motoring convictions
- Proof of your No Claims Discount, also known as No Claims Bonus, if you have accumulated a few years without making any claims with previous insurers
- The same details as above for any named drivers you’d like to add to your policy
- Your car’s registration number
- The make and model of the car you want insured
- When you bought the car and when you’d like your policy to start
- An estimate of your annual mileage
- Where you will be parking your car overnight
- How you intend to use the car (Social Domestic and Pleasure, Social Domestic and Pleasure with Commuting to work or Social Domestic and Pleasure with Commuting to work and Business Use)
When applying for a quote, it’s essential that you are open and honest with your answers, as failure to disclose any relevant information could invalidate your policy. You also need to let your insurer know if any of your details change during the policy term.
