Can I drive my car in Europe and abroad?

Ageas Standard policy - You will be provided with cover as standard while you or any driver covered on your policy is driving within the European Union. The European Commission has announced that with effect from the 2nd August 2021, UK drivers will no longer be required to carry Green Cards when driving their vehicle in the EU (including Ireland), Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Serbia, and Switzerland. You can find out more within your policy booklet, or by clicking on the link below. https://www.ageas.co.uk/green-card-information/

Please be aware that a Green Card may still be required to drive in other countries, including: Albania, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Moldova, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine. For more information on government guidelines, please visit the link below https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-insurance/driving-abroad.

If you still require a Green Card, you can request one at no extra cost from us by calling. Please have your travel dates available and give us 2-3 weeks’ notice to ensure that you receive your Green Card in the post in good time. Alternatively, if you prefer, we can email your Green Card to you, but you will have to print it off yourself.

Can I drive other cars?

Were you looking to discuss this for a new quote or an existing policy?

New quote - This can be found on your Quote Summary page, usually under ‘Your Policy Information’.

Existing policy - Driving other cars cover is not available to all customers. This is decided by our underwriting team, based on the details you enter on your quote. To check if you have this cover, please log in to your online account and check your Certificate of Motor Insurance. Section 5 will confirm if you are able to drive other cars or not; if this cover is available, it will be on a third party only basis. As this term is set by our underwriters, based on criteria such as your age and occupation, it is not an option to add this to the policy if you do not currently have this cover.

Do I need business use?

Business use is needed if you are travelling to more than one place of work.

When do I get a courtesy car?

A courtesy car is covered as standard in our policies. This will only be provided whilst your vehicle is being repaired by one of our approved repairers.

We also offer 'Replacement Car Cover', which provides a hire car for up to 14 continuous days if the car you have insured with is unrecoverable (for example, if it was stolen or written off). Our standard courtesy car is a small hatchback whereas our Replacement Car Cover will provide a similar vehicle to your own.

You will not need to add this as optional cover if you would only like to be covered with a courtesy car in the event of your car being repaired by one of our approved repairers.

What's a policy excess?

A policy excess is the amount you have to pay towards the cost of your claim. There are different excesses that may apply. Details of your policy excess can be found in your policy schedule, or as part of your quote result.

A compulsory excess is the amount you have to pay towards the claim. This will be shown in your policy schedule as a ‘standard’ excess.

A voluntary excess is something you may have added when you took your policy out.

This excess will be added to the standard (or compulsory) policy excess in the event of a claim.

Am I covered for voluntary driving?

Voluntary work is work carried out by a person willingly without receiving any financial gain (except for mileage allowance). This is not something we need to record on your policy. If you receive a financial gain, please record this on your policy under the occupation section. If you are an existing customer, you can do this in your online account by following the steps below:

  • Log in to your online account
  • Click ‘Change policy details’
  • Underneath ‘Need to change driver details?’ click ‘Edit’
  • Input the date of the change and click ‘Continue’
  • Insert your new details
  • Once all the details are entered, click ‘Continue’
  • Click ‘Save’ to exit or ‘Continue’ to purchase the change.

You can log in to your online account here: https://my.ageas.co.uk/login

My vehicle's not showing as insured on the Motor Insurance Database
