Electric car insurance FAQs

Electric car insurance isn’t a separate product. It’s standard car insurance that includes features relevant to electric and hybrid vehicles.

You don’t need specialist insurance just because you drive an electric car. You’re welcome to choose a dedicated electric vehicle policy if you prefer, but it isn’t essential. The Ageas standard car insurance already includes features that support electric car drivers, such as cover for your battery and charging equipment. See policy documents for more information.

Just like standard Ageas Car Insurance, it depends on several factors including:

  • The value of your car
  • The insurance group your car is in
  • Where you live
  • Where you park your car
  • What you use your car for
  • The level of cover
  • Your age
  • Your driving history

Some ways that you may be able to reduce car insurance costs include:

  • Pay annually
  • Increase your voluntary excess if you can afford to pay it at the claims stage
  • Improve your electric vehicles security - this may help reduce your insurance premium
  • Choose an electric vehicle in a lower insurance group
  • Only pay for the cover you need

Yes, road tax is required for electric cars that are used on public roads, this became a legal requirement in April 2025.

There are many factors that can impact car insurance costs, your personal details as well as external circumstances. A few examples are the car value, the driver's age and occupation through to car repair costs, energy prices and inflation. EVs can sometimes cost more to buy and repair, so they can be more expensive to insure.

Yes, the Ageas electric car insurance provides electric car battery cover for loss, accidental damage, fire and theft. It will not cover batery failure or reduction of performance.

With our optional RAC breakdown cover you get the reassurance you need knowing your electric car is covered if it runs out of charge. If you’re stuck and your car is out of power, RAC will take you to the nearest charging point.

  • Unsafe charging cable usage. Claims may not be paid if the loss or damage arises from the charging cable being used in an unsafe manner or not being used in accordance with the car manufacturer's instructions.
  • Incomplete software updates. Policyholders should ensure the car's software is kept up to date by installing any safety critical and/or security updates made available by the car manufacturer.
  • Mechanical or electrical breakdown (i.e. running out of battery) unless they have optional breakdown cover.
  • Using the car’s equipment in a different way than what the car manufacturer advised to use it or in an unsafe way
  • Any consequence caused by a cyber-attack due to failure of accepting, installing or refusing over-the-air software updates, advanced driver assistance systems or security updates from the manufacturer.

Good to know

  • Courtesy car - if you have an electric car, we may not be able to get you an electric courtesy car in which case you will be offered a hybrid or an internal combustion engine (ICE) car.
  • Equipment - ensure you use your car's equipment in according with the manufacturers' instructions, such as electric charging cables and tow bars.
  • Tehnology - ensure that any vehicle automation or driver aids (e.g. Auto Lane Keep Systems) are used in line with manufacturer instructions and with due care and attention at all times.
  • Lower fuel costs
  • Zero tailpipe emissions - electric cars produce no exhaust emissions when driving, which can help improve local air quality in towns and cities
  • Reduced environmental impact in use - by avoiding tailpipe emissions, electric cars can help lower emissions from day‑to‑day driving, although overall impact depends on factors such as electricity generation and vehicle manufacture..
  • Easier to maintain, as they don’t need:
    • Oil changes
    • Exhaust repairs
    • Spark plugs or timing belts
    • Regenerative braking also means brake pads wear out more slowly.
  • Potentially lower maintenance costs
  • Lower road tax in the first year
