In its eight decades of history*, Volkswagen (VW) has become globally renowned for its lineup of family cars.

Today, that offering includes everything from the ever-popular Golf and Polo models, through to the Up! and Go! city cars, and the family friendly Passat and Arteon.

Three things to know about Volkswagen

  • Production of the Beetle was in the late 1970s, but was resumed in 1998 with Volkswagen rolling out the New Beetle, which was based on the original Type 1 design^.
  • As of 2016, Volkswagen has jostled with Toyota to claim itself the world’s largest automotive manufacturer by sales**.
  • Volkswagen’s Polo and Golf models are among the UK’s best-selling, with the latter being the country’s second most popular new car model in 2019^^.

Tax bands and insurance groups for Volkswagen

When calculating your car insurance quote, insurers will look at a range of information about yourself and your car, in order to get you a price that’s suitable for your circumstances. One factor that some insurers may look at is the insurance group of the vehicle you’d like covered. Insurance groups are bandings running from 1-50, that reflect the costs and risks associated with each model of car, therefore helping insurers to estimate the likelihood and scale of any potential claims.

There’s also a banding system applied when it comes to paying tax on your vehicle in the first year it’s registered. Known as Vehicle Excise Duty, this initial charge will be based upon your model’s observed CO2 emissions.

Tax bands and insurance groups for VW models include:
