Since 1909, the Japanese company Suzuki has produced everything from motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles through to marine engines and wheelchairs. But it’s in their varied lineup of cars that this make has truly excelled, including the small and sporty Swift and the Vitara, which offers room for all the family.

Three facts about Suzuki

  • Suzuki started out by producing looms for Japan’s once-prosperous silk industry, before turning to mass-market vehicles in the 1950s. Its first mass-produced car was the Suzulight*.
  • After partnering with American manufacturer General Motors, Suzuki underwent global expansion in the 1980s, making household names of models like the Swift and Vitara^.
  • As of 2017, worldwide sales of Suzuki cars have topped three million annually, making the company one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers**.

Insurance groups and tax bands for Suzuki models

There’s a lot of information that goes into a car insurance quote, so your insurer can settle on a price. For one, you may find that circumstances like your age and what you do for a living are considered. The car you’d like covered will matter too, and some insurers may look at your vehicle’s insurance group. Insurance groups are bandings running from 1-50, whereby the cars in the lowest groups tend to have safer records and are cheaper to repair.

Another banding system to familiarise yourself with is the one used to calculate how much road tax (known as Vehicle Excise Duty) you owe. Drivers of new cars will be charged at a flat annual rate for the most part, excluding the first year that the car is registered. In that year, how much tax is owed will depend on the vehicle’s CO2 emissions and the band that these emissions place it into as a result.

Car tax bands and insurance groups for popular Suzuki models include:

Model Insurance Group Tax Band
Suzuki Celerio City 1.0l Manual 67bhp 7 E
Suzuki Baleno SZ-3 Dual Jet 1.2l Manual 89bhp 13 F
Suzuki Jimny SZ-5 AllGrip Pro 1.5l Automatic 101bhp 14 I
Suzuki Ignis SZ-T Dual Jet SHVS 1.2l Manual 89bhp 20 F
